Tutoring: French Syntax

Semester

Sep - Dec 2022

I applied for Yonsei Global Tutoring programme as a tutor of the course FRE4117: Studies in French Syntax that I took in 2021.

For applying as a tutor, it is required to get at least A- grade in that course. Received A+, I was able to apply and had one student whose nationality is UAE but speaks Korean and French quite well. Since she felt difficulty understanding jargons and some Korean words, she applied for this programme as a tutee.

We had to archive what we had studies together offline on the LearnUs, the University website for course management. Throughout the semester, we met more than 20 times for about 2 hours every Wednesday, going to the library or anywhere else, such as a cafe or empty classroom where we could have discussions more loudly.
Except the first meeting when I gave her a brief orientation and introduction of the course, we reviewed what she had learned and understood from the lecture and compared with my notes that I wrote during my study in the previous year. This helped me a lot to follow the flow of the professor's lecture and organise the topics that I had to prepare and teach to my tutee.

Finally, she could get a grade of A, which is a remarkable score in my opinion whose mother language is nor Korean or French. We had a very positive response by the Innovation Center for Teaching and Learning, which organises this Tutoring programme, we could be nominated as one of the top teams eligible for scholarships and as a result could receive it and an award as well.

This experience was meaningful to me, since it was the first semester I could spend on campus after the Covid-19 pandemic. I was so glad I could meet a great tutee eager to learn from me and also from professors, so I was able to devote to this programme since I was motivated by her.
Furthermore, my skills of communication in different languages was developed much more through this. Recollecting my previous experience in language exchange programme that I did shortly during my first year, and volunteering as a Korean tutor for exchange students in Yonsei, I could find out ways to communicate with my tutee without difficulty in addition to speaking in English or French.
