Researching Contemporary

Semester

Jan - Jun 2023

This course aims not only to build students' creativity to make the critical framework within which to explore current issues in art practice, interpret the production, consumption and display of historical and contemporary art but also develop their own practical approaches to the communication of art and design history and theory to interrogate contemporary art and visual culture.
Through this goals, students are asked to explore different creative position and present (in spoken and written form) research, interests, and perspectives.

1. Presentation
This was a foundation for our second project, to set up a whole curatorial project that required all the considerations and analysis that we had to make in this project.
As a team, my friend (also an exchange student from the same university of mine) and I had to visit an exhibition and analyse its content, delivery, lighting, positioning, and more that can be elements of curating an exhibition.
We visited Tate Modern and specifically the Turbine Hall. I was very interested in the Tate Modern and Hyundai Motor partnership, and this was my first time visiting Tate and also seeing their partnership. At that time when we visited there, there were installation artworks made by Cecilia Vicuna, titled Brain Forest Quipu. With a small TV showing a documentary highlighting the issue the artist mainly deals with, we could get the flow of the exhibition and could find room for improvement, which was presented through our presentation during the class.
Our tutor was very impressed by our presentation, since we both highlighted the goods and bads regarding installation, experience, the use of sound and space of this exhibition and also could find and intertwine with extra materials regarding the notion of bigness (done by my friend) and the connection between other exhibitions held in Tate (done by myself). In conclusion, we proposed an idea to strengthen the effect of the exhibition, which seemed to be very persuasive to the tutor and classmates as well.

2. Curatorial Project
Until the end of the semester, we were developing a curatorial project based on our visits on numerous museum and gallery visits. Among them, we, as Korean exchange students, found that there was an exhibition held in V&A; Hallyu The Korean Wave. Appreaciating and analysing this exhibition with our perspective, we found some goods and bads as we practiced in the first project and came up with an exhibition that would function as a tribute to the former exhibition but with more traditional and balanced view. Thanks to the enjoyable process of creating and connecting ideas critically that we are familiar with, we could gain the highest grade in the class with our project.

I have a curatorial proposal regarding this second project that I have developed after the semester ended, by myself, adding my personal interests in perfumery and critical interpretation as well.
