CDM1003: Creative Thinking and Visualisation

Semester

Sep - Dec 2020

This course taught me to think creative and visualise what I think, as the title of the course suggests. This was another opportunity for me to hone my artistic skills close to fine art which I admire.

For the first project called [lines recording movement], I had to choose one music that I like. After the first attempt just trying to be accustomed to play with lines, I set up color schemes that would perfectly match the song FANTASY by Alina Baraz and Galimatias. Both artists have attracting voices that I really like. Their voices are like a perfect mixture of half-air and half-sound, and give feeling of a dream and a godly figures in front of me.
My first attempt was using the last color chart. I tried to express the strong impression of their voice through red as a primary color, and black as a secondary color. And the muted orange was originally aimed to soften the overall mood. But I discarded this version. The shape was not good, and also it did not give any sense of the song that I listened to. Red and black was too strong, and there was not much of softness.
In my second trial time, I kept my first instinct, purple. I used the 7th color chart and modified the priority of colors, and used muted pink and purple as two main colors, and gave an impact with black. Moreover, I made lines more rhythmically and thicker.

For the second project called [memory landscape], students had to randomly be matched with one partner and interpret each other's story. My partner's story is quite scary and fun:
She illustrated a story when she was a kid. The story began on a trail road, and two kids, her and her friend, were riding a bike peacefully. The summer breeze blew between trees during the daytime peacefully. However, two kids found an elderly couple in front of them doing the weird dance with their hands to escape from the wasps, and there came a traumatic moment. My partner, as a kid, got stung by the bees, and the other kid helped her go back to her home.
When I heard this story, the overall image was peaceful and calm. But reading this story again and again, I thought the embarrassment coming from bees is essential for depicting the story. Therefore, the theme for my memory landscape photo collage is ‘chaos.’
After choosing the theme, I also chose a specific bushy mountain nearby my home that would resemble the place where my partner fell off from her bike and got stung by bees, becoming dizzy. To enhance a sense of the chaotic moment, I made the focus in the center of the work as if everything is sucked into one point, visualising the buzzing sound of bees as well. This is based on my experience whenever I have a headache or getting dizzy, feeling the sky is spinning and all the things are becoming vague and wavy.
Finally, using Adobe Photoshop and printing in a huge scale, I completed the visualisation of my partner's story.

For the third and last project called [self portrait], I was able to have time to reflect myself and paint with much care on the sketchbook. The professor was highly impressed by Chuck Close, famous for his pixel-grid paintings. Following him, she instructed students to reinterpret our own face into tiny cells of pixels.
I think my personalities are divided into two which can be symbolized with these colors; red signifies my ambitious and active character when hanging out with my best friends, and blue illustrates the calm and rational part of mine when people look at me at first glance without any intimate conversation. For the grid system, I chose constructing different box sizes for depicting detailed part such as eyes and lips and make other parts vague such as neck and hair area.
The reason why I put much detail onto eyes are that they are the most important organs for me, since it directly delivers and accepts actions and atmosphere of the place and people I see. As you see from the outer faceline to eyes, the colour also changes from blue tone to red tone which signifies that eyes are the most closest place to see through my inner state of mind to be passionate, which is not fully expressed in my appearance.
